SALCAB management conducts its annual management retreat in order to consider the company's strategic direction, review progress, and set up goals and objectives for the year. This year, the retreat was held on the 29th – 31st of January, 2020. The off-site retreat offered an unparalleled opportunity for the team to see beyond their silos and create shared ownership as a management group ultimately responsible for the entirety of the operations of SALCAB.

The retreat produced clear and detailed action plans while also strengthening the teams, thereby allowing them to tackle very specific problems or questions. The team saw a massive improvement on interconnected cultures, not only across office locations, but across the various departments as well. For example, the commercial department got to interact with the procurement department and the technical team got to connect with the finance team. A sense of unity was created that spread beyond just the few days of the actual retreat.

This year’s retreat was implemented to be the defining moment of SALCAB’s fiscal year. It was an opportunity for the entire management team to re-unite, re-focus and re-energize. During the welcome address offered by the Board Chairman, Sorie Fofana, he commended the team for the outstanding achievements of the previous year. He acknowledged that the team achieved these wins under challenging times. He went on to say that he will continue to support the team in achieving the goals and objectives of the company. The Managing Director, Ishmael Kebbay Jr, gave a speech on his vision for the company for the current year. Given that the President had declared 2020 to be the Year of Delivery, Mr Kebbay encouraged all the Heads of Departments to ensure that their teams are productive this year and accomplish the tasks that will be outlined in the retreat. The MD added that for 2020 he wants SALCAB to extend its reach beyond its clients to university students. As the only optical fibre infrastructure company in Sierra Leone, the MD mentioned that it is the responsibility of the company to spread the awareness and knowledge about optical fibre engineering to students. He encouraged the team to implement projects that will help achieve these objectives. His overall vision for the company for 2020 was that it increases its broadband penetration to the provinces with the successful implementation of the National Fibre Backbone 2 (NFB 2) project. He committed to provide all the necessary support to the teams to ensure that SALCAB closes the year with significant progress made towards the completion of the project

Every Head of Department presented their Strategic Plan and budget for review and approval. The plan set the direction for the company, devised goals and objectives and identified a range of strategies to pursue so that the company might achieve its goals. The HODs also provided the organisation personnel with a clear picture of their tasks and responsibilities in line with the goals and objectives contained within the Strategic Plan.

By the end of the retreat, the SALCAB management team had learnt how to position the company in such a way to make it proactive to threats rather than reactive. The team dispersed with a sense of direction on how to increase operational efficiency in order to increase market share and profitability.
